CEE National Convention October 3-5 wants the WIcked Good Teachers!

We are pleased to announce that our proposed session for the national convention of the Council for Economics Education has been accepted!

Join us October 3-5 in beautiful Baltimore, MD!
Our Session:

Common Core, Common Good: Economics and Service Learning

Students always ask, “How does this apply to real life?” Integrated English, news, math, history, and economics lessons in service learning are great answers to this!  From exploring demographic data on poverty and raising money for kid’s coats,  to hosting a Civil War luncheon where “prices” of desserts reflect inflation on both sides of the conflict, to opening a hot chocolate cafĂ©, join us for a Common Core Standards- supported journey through economics-based service learning!
With a combined teaching career of almost 20 years, Kelley Baryenbruch and Sarah Scovell Muraski have developed integrated courses for the middle school level that focus on economics and the Common Core Standards for English, math and social studies through the lens of service learning that have met with great student success.
Sarah and Kelley have shared the delivery of Intro to Economics, an elective that focuses on economic literacy and the place of the consumer in history and in the local and global markets. Students are fascinated by how things like earthquakes and centuries-old slave revolts impact modern economies or how much goes into developing sustainable fundraising.  It always amazes students to see how they as consumers function and influence things even at the age of fourteen. By including service learning in this study, financial and historical literacy and diversity are partners in creating good citizens of the students—not only making them aware, but teaching them how to make connections, create blogs, and even start small non-profit businesses at school to support their efforts.
Join Kelley and Sarah as they share lessons, handouts, resources, and great stories about their adventures with students and the community at large that help “(spare) change the world”!
